Aspiring candidates have to follow the given steps to become a Radio Jockey.

Step 1
Interested candidate has to appear in an entrance test conducted by EMDI Encompass Institute of Radio Management to admit candidates in (course 1,2,3) six months course. Candidates are admitted after the merit in the written exam and the screening test. Screening test only in case of the certificate course only.

Note: To be eligible to join three of the above (course 1, course 2, and course 4) one should be 10+2 in any stream, and a graduate for (course 3)

Step 2
After completing any of these courses in which one has to go through all the major aspects of the field of study one can join some channel to start his career on a high note.

 

Radio Jockey Institutes/Colleges

Although there are hardly any specialized radio jockey courses, you could look at All India Radio as a good training ground.

AIR holds auditions every three months and selected RJs are given training for two months and introduced to audio technology. If you are interested in the field, this can be a great start to a booming career.

A few popular RJs have also started their own training schools that offer RJ courses that land you terrific RJ jobs.

A degree in any field is a pre-requisite. Several institutes also offer courses in communication and broadcasting which can last from two months up to a year.

There are also some professional crash courses in voiceovers and mixing that you could take up.
Short-term workshops in diction, creative thinking, and music appreciation can also give you a head start.


 

Entrance Exam

 You must have one or more of the following Radio Jockey courses:

- Diploma in Radio Programming and Broadcasting Management

- Diploma in Radio Jockeying

- Post-Graduate Diploma in Radio and Broadcasting Management

- Certificate course in Radio Jockeying

- Diploma in Radio Jockeying etc. 

 

If you possess the required skills and experience, you will have a number of job opportunities where you can show off your skills. There are a number of private players like Radio Mirchi, Red FM, and others, who are always on the lookout for fresh talent. 
Another radio station you could work for is the public enterprise AIR (All India Radio). 

If you are good at your work, you also have the opportunity to venture into the visual sphere, with many successful RJs making the jump into television.

What matters the most in this career path is, obviously, your voice. Your diction and pronunciation should be clear. You need to know how to modulate the pitch and tenor of your voice. For different radio programs, you will have to modulate your voice differently, so you must keep that in mind.

  • News Reader: Radio news has a set format and hence one needs to learn the way to speak on the radio before jumping into the mainstream jockeying world.
  • On-AIR Personalities: These are the radio jockeys we hear on a regular basis and their major work is to keep listeners entertained along with scheduling ads and managing studio arrangements.
  • Production Director: This is the position one may attain after being a senior On-Air personality. This is the person who controls On-Air traffic and schedules production and strategizes programs.
  • Station Manager: This is one of the senior positions on the radio station. This is the person responsible for managing the station issues and programs.

Video Jockey can earn the starting salary Rs. 3 Lac to Rs. 5 Lacs per annum. As you get to be famous and a known face in the industry with some real on-camera experience, your salary will also keep growing.
